On Friday I will be with the 8th graders on their Wild Waves trip and students will be watching "GATTACA" in class. This film will address some biology principles, such as nature vs nurture, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, genetic screening, DNA profiling, human rights, and genetic modification (recombinant DNA). As a class, we have researched genetic technologies and this film will add to our ethics discussions. I have included the synopsis and rating information below. If you do not wish to allow your student to see this film please e-mail me at email@example.com. The alternate learning experience will be to research issues in bioethics (from internet and library sources) and prepare a short report. This film is rated "PG13" because of the following: brief violent images, language, and some sexuality Synopsis “There is No Gene for the Human Spirit” One man defies a system obsessed with genetic perfection. Ethan Hawke stars as Vincent, an “In-Valid,” who assumes the identity of a member of the genetic elite to pursue his goal of traveling into space with the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation. However, a week before his mission, a murder marks Vincent as a suspect. With a relentless investigator in pursuit and the colleague he has fallen in love with beginning to suspect his deception, Vincent’s dreams steadily unravel.
