Science Book Summaries

Reminder for those who did not take notes:

We will be writing a summary of each book we read over the course of the year.

Summaries need to include at least three thoughts (paragraphs).
1. What was the book about?
    - This typically should be the largest section of the paper
2. Did the book live up to its:
     - Cover
     - Table of Contents
     - Pictures/Graphs
     - Or any other reason you choose the book
3. Would you recommend this book to a classmate? Why?

Summaries should be typed and be between ½ and 1 page long, single spaced. If you choose to double space your paper, it should be between 1 and 2 pages.

I've been getting a lot of questions in class about formatting. In response, you must use your best judgement. In the professional world, no one will tell you what size or type of font to use, you must make a judgement call. So, you may use whatever font you like, as long as it is a professional looking academic font (no comic sans, cursive fonts, decorative fonts, or symbolic fonts). Samples are below.

The first summary is due on November 6th

There needs to be a calculation sheet to show how you followed the procedure to create your model. You may use any spherical objects that you like for your model as long as they are correctly proportioned. Your model may be any size as long as it is correctly proportioned.

Grading

Homework is always out of 4 points. Students who score between 75% and 100% correct on their work will earn a 4. Scores between 50% and 74% will earn a 3. Scores between 25% and 49% will earn a 2. Scores less than a 2 should really be reworked for understanding and completion. Missing assignments earn a 0.

Homework that is turned in late, even due to an absence, will be graded after all other assignments have been graded. This means that the assignment may be marked as 0 and missing in Skyward until I have time to correct it. This may take up to two weeks.

Quizzes will usually be worth 10 points. Quizzes may or may not be announced in advance. There are no quiz retakes.

Tests will be worth 50-100 points. Tests will always be announced in advance. There are no test retakes.

I do not offer extra credit. Students need to come to class prepared every day with all assigned work completed. Fully studying for tests and quizzes needs to occur before the test as this is an essential skill for your education.

Students are always welcome in my classroom after school to get any extra support they may need or to have a quiet place to work.
